How a Toxic Work Environment Eventually Sucks The Life Out of Your Soul
Understand This Truth: Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe
If You Don’t LOVE Your Job, Fix It Or Leave It Before It Ensnares You
Take a moment and think about the 5 people you spend the most time with on a day-in and day-out basis. To be clear, I’m not asking who you want to spend the most time with each day, I’m asking you to think about the hours you actually do spend with all the people in your life and who are the 5 people that receive the bulk of your time each day?
For most people this short list will include a boss and several co-workers, assuming you work for a company. Now call deep on your courage to answer this questions honestly: How much do you love and respect these people? I ask this question because over time, we adapt and change ourselves in order to “fit in.” So take a moment to reflect if you seek to become one of them or hope that you do not. According to motivational speaker Jim Rohn, “You’re the average of the five people spend the most time with,” and there is new research that shows that it doesn’t just stop there. If one of your friends becomes obese, you’re 45% more likely to gain weight in the next two to four years.
Every Day, We Vote With Our Feet Here’s a fascinating trend I’ve noticed with those people who I work with. Given enough time working in toxic environments, really great people begin to morph into something they are not, nor did they ever want to become. And yet, it happens all the time – mostly without even noticing how much of our life is on autopilot. Mahatma Gandhi warned us to be mindful of our beliefs because ““Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny.”
Despite our knowledge of working in a toxic place of business, most of us vote with our feet every single day by showing up to work and doing the best that we can – despite the conditions of employment that we’re not fond of. We don’t realize that we are contributing greatly to the success of something we don’t believe in. It is our actions that allow these toxic environments to exist in the first place; a fact that few of us want to admit to ourselves or anyone else.
Our Environments Shape Us The longer we work in an environment, the more it begins to shape who we are and how we operate – for good or for ill. That’s why workplace culture is so important. A healthy and thriving culture allows us to fully express who we are and what we believe. We feel included and supported as we work to get really good at what we do and deliver the results required to succeed.
Conversely, a toxic environment begins to eat away at us from the inside. It takes a huge toll on our health as we live in this uncomfortable place that doesn’t sit right with us. As we learn “the rules” of a toxic workplace, we tend to disengage and do whatever is necessary to minimize our being sucked into the vortex of a culture we don’t agree with. And yet, the more time we spend in this environment, the harder it becomes to remain the person we truly are (and desire to improve).
Are You Honoring or Ignoring Your Special Gifts & Talents? One of the biggest tragedies in all of this is the systematic denial of our true gifts while operating in a culture that doesn’t match who we really are. When we ignore our special gifts and talents, they become dull and we become average. Conversely, when we honor and live into our special gifts and talents, we become so much greater than the sum total of our circumstances.
Honoring your special gifts and talents means that you show up 100% you each and every day – unapologetically and full of passion for what you’re doing in both your career and in your life.
Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe When you live congruently you show up differently. When you have a team that not only supports you, but also encourages you to be bold and be the best version of yourself each and every day, something magical happens. No longer do you fear unleashing your true potential. Instead, you see a world of possibility as you grow into the very life you were meant to lead.
This is what fires me up. This is what I live for. My whole world changed when I stopped allowing my environment and those around me to mold and shape me. Today, I decide whom I choose to be each and every day. I’ve never had more passion for life or more joy and fulfillment in my life than when I decided to focus on my true potential and harness the awesomeness deep within me. And I didn’t do it alone – nor am I asking you to do this by yourself.
Your Entire Life Changes In The Moment of Decision
This is your moment. Deep down you’ve always known that you’re so much more than the set of circumstances you find yourself in today. Today you get to choose. You can choose to push this feeling down even deeper, or you can acknowledge that the time has come for you to step into something so much better. Know that whatever you decide, it is in deed a choice you get to make right here and now. If you’re truly ready to make a lasting change in your life, then we should talk. Having been in your shoes, I know precisely how challenging and scary it can feel to make a change. And yet, the moment you decide, you’re going to experience a tremendous weight being lifting off your shoulders as your body releases all the toxicity that it has stored as a means of protecting you.
Once you begin this new journey, you will find that you attract different people into your life. The 5 people you spend the most time with will be a conscious decision and very likely the kind of people you aspire most to be like. So rather than being 45% more likely to gain weight over the next two to four years, imagine being 45% more likely to become financially free, healthier and happier. Who you surround yourself matters. Your future awaits!
